From Chapter 1

An Ocean of Life – Life Begins in the Sea

The author discusses our evolutionary link to the sea and some reasons for our attraction to the sea:

“Leaving the ocean came at a price – we had to carry some of the ocean with us, our own ‘pinched-off ambulatory seas’. When a surfer, diver or sailor tells us that the sea is ‘in my blood’, that person is speaking almost literally.”

“Our evolutionary link with the sea may partly explain this attraction to the ocean, but deeper existential qualities we sense in ourselves are reflected in the ocean, and these shared qualities might also be responsible for our attraction to the sea. “
